You are invited to participate in a research study, entitled "Mindfulness and Acceptance for Exercise in Anxiety." The study is being conducted by Emily Carl, Psychology Dept. in the Institute for Mental Health Research, The University of Texas at Austin, 305 E. 23rd St., Stop E9000, Austin, TX, 78712, telephone 512-471-7694. You can contact our study directly at EnjoyYourRunStudy@gmail.com.
The purpose of this research study is to examine to examine whether cognitive strategies can encourage regular exercise and improve adherence to exercise goals. Your participation in the study will contribute to a better understanding of how exercise can be more enjoyable, and how to improve adherence to exercise goals. You are free to contact the investigator at the above address and phone number to discuss the study. You must be at least 18 years old to participate.
This online survey is a prescreen for the complete study. This prescreen:
• Will take approximately 15 minutes of your time.
• Will be comprised of several surveys online.
• Will enable us to determine your eligibility for the full study based on your responses to these questionnaires.
If you are eligible and you agree to participate in the full study:
• Full participation in the study will take approximately 3 hours of your time.
• You will complete surveys, set an exercise goal, and receive one of two trainings in the lab. Next, you will run on a treadmill at a moderate-intensity pace. In addition to the appointment in the lab, you will practice the strategies and exercise at home for at least one hour total, twice per week. Participants will continue to complete daily questionnaires through the three weeks. All participants are asked to try to meet their weekly exercise goals, take a brief daily survey, and complete an exit survey at the end of the one week.
• You will not be compensated. If you are enrolled in PSY 301, you can accrue half a research credit per hour of participation in this study, up to 3 credits.
Because this prescreen confers minimal risk and is to be completed online, written consent will not be collected at this time. If you are eligible to complete the rest of the study after this prescreen, written consent will be obtained at the beginning of the study visit.
